Winter Fitness Training for Runners

Winter is upon us and with this change of season comes freezing temperatures with snowy, dangerous conditions. However, just because there are patches of ice and several inches of snow on your usual running route, you don't have to put your workouts on hold! Instead of risking injury exercising in harsh weather, head to your local Giant Fitness center and substitute an outdoor workout with a variety of indoor workouts that incorporate exercise machines, free weights and cardio equipment.

Move Your Training Routine Indoors

Exercise machines, like the Leg Extension and Lat Pull-down, are easy to operate and isolate specific muscle groups, which help you quickly and efficiently focus on a particular body part. Free weights, like dumbbells and barbells, can be used in a number of ways and exercise a number of supporting muscle groups at the same time. For example, a dumbbell lunge primarily works your thigh muscle, but you are simultaneously working other muscles that are important for running, such as your core, hamstring, and glutes. Finally, cardio equipment, like a treadmill or stationary bike, is a great way to replicate an endurance workout without having to face the elements outside.
